The Cockburn Cougars and Rockingham Flames have teamed up to announce a joint Western Australia Junior Basketball League (WABL) venture – the McIntyre-Moore Cup.
Commencing April 14 at Wally Hagan Stadium, the inaugural event will function as a pre-season day for both association’s junior WABL teams.
The cup is named after two families with more than 1,245 State Basketball League games between them – the Moore’s and McIntyre’s. Now retired, Travis and Karina Moore, plus Sheldon and Fleur McIntyre, represent the values both association’s stand for.
Cockburn Basketball Association General Manager is excited about the new partnership, with the day providing another junior development opportunity for teams ahead of a busy WABL season.
“The McIntyre-Moore Cup is a wonderful chance to bring two strong basketball communities together for a day of opportunity for our juniors,” Thwaites said.
“But it is more than just that. We’re talking about two associations with a rich history to provide a day that builds community spirit, educates coaches, generates social opportunities for athletes, and builds on the existing friendly rivalry.”
Rockingham Flames President Warren Boucaut agrees, joking that with Travis Moore’s kids now playing at Cockburn, his Flames fire is well and truly still alive.
“Travis Moore is a living-legend of a proud Rockingham Flames history,” Boucaut said.
“I have no doubt he sees red and black more than he sees blue and gold on a basketball court, and we will make sure the Cougars know that.
“That aside, we are excited to work alongside Cockburn for a partnership that extends over multiple years, with next year’s cup returning to the Mike Barnett Sport’s Complex for an equally large day of opportunity for junior Flames and Cougars.”
The Perth Wildcats will also play a part at the inaugural event, with merchandise available and a number of players present in exciting news for each association’s junior athletes.
With both teams finalising their 2019 WABL teams, more information on the day will be available soon. – ENDS –
