On a rainy, humid evening at the Mandurah Aquatic Recretion Centre, it was the Rockingham Flames Men's team that combined youth and experience to get a solid Round 1 win against a tricky Mandurah Magic lineup.
If there were nerves, it didn't show on the scoreboard, 20-30 at the end of the first quarter the visiting Flames a 10 point lead with Ryan Godfrey leading the charge with 11pts in the period, on his way to make 31 for the night.
The 3rd quarter saw Mandurah moving the chess pieces around, digging in for an 11 point run. But it wasn't enough, with Rockingham holding on to the lead for nearly the entire game.
Coach Ryan Petrik was complimentary of his team's efforts especially with 40 points coming from the bench.
Meanwhile, the Women's game was tough night, Amy Atwell was ready to go after her WNBL season with the Perth Lynx, notching up 24pts for the outing.
Mandurah's Claire Jacobs was simply too good for the night scoring 34pts with 9/12 2PFG.
Coach David Morrell was pleased with some of his efforts from the younger players in the group.
